Brigg Ladies 1s vs Halifax 2s

A rare sun-soaked day for hockey and Brigg ladies 1XI blazed through to a win for their first league match against Halifax 2XI.

Brigg started strong keeping possession and making some early breaks into the attacking half with Maddy firing the ball into the back board by the 12th minute for 1-0. Brigg kept their tails up and their feet in the attacking half winning a short corner 3 minutes later. Dickson received the ball at the top of the D from Sparks-Kerss and sent it scorching past the keeper upping the score to 2-0.

A substitution for Brigg shortly after the second goal momentarily left a much needed gap for Halifax in which they capitalised, turning over the ball and burning down the pitch. A cracking initial save from Porter unfortunately wasn’t enough to keep a second shot from Halifax out bringing the score up to 2-1.

The half time whistle was welcomed by both teams to gain a respite from the heat of the midday sun and a chance to regroup. A solid talk from Coach Kershaw did the trick with Brigg coming out firing again in the second half. The majority of possession was again under Brigg’s control with a number of well worked balls from the back up through the pitch to the attacking D. A few narrowly missed shots from Maddy, Dickson and Lamb kept Halifax on their toes. Halifax did turn over a few down to Brigg’s defensive area, winning a couple of shorts, but weren’t able to convert.
Brigg dug deep on tired legs leading to another steamer of a goal from Maddy in the 66th minute making the score 3-1.

Brigg maintained composure to spark out the match with the 2 goal lead and those all important 3 points to start the season.
